Abstract
The research programme overlaps with that of the Institute for Ethnic Studies, comprising the research and study of the following basic topics:
- Ethnicity in Slovenia, and within the issue the study of autochthonous national communities (national minorities) and other ethnic communities (“new minorities”) in Slovenia, ethnic relations in the Slovene state and ethnic territory, formation of the Slovene statehood and identity, as well as the study of state borders (border studies) and trans-border cooperation,
- Slovene national minorities in the neighbouring states (Austria, Croatia, Italy, Hungary),
- Issues regarding Slovenes in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, or, in a wider sense, displacements of Slovenes in other former states (the Hapsburg monarchy),
- Migration processes in the Slovene ethnic territory, as well as in European and world context,
- International and internal legal and political regulation of the status, protection and rights of national and other minorities (especially in the context of human rights), as well as comparative studies in the regional, European and world context (e.g. education, culture, economic and social development and status, social integration, political participation, etc.),
- The study of manifestations of ethnic issue in Europe and worldwide, including the problems of the formation of common European plural identity in the processes of European integration, along with the implementation of the multi- or interculturalism policy,
- The study of (inter)ethnic relations and the problems of regulation and management of interethnic relations and conflicts,
- The development of methodology and theory of ethnic studies, the study of ethnic issues, etc.
Within the framework of research in the field of ethnic and minority studies, along with the study of ethnic issues, while considering the complexity and multi- or interdisciplinary nature of this research field (which also conditions approaches and research methodology together with its development in this field), the research programme dedicates special attention to the following topics: (inter)ethnic relations in ethnically plural surroundings; ethnic and social structure of societies; migrations; the status, role and (social) integration of specific communities – particularly minority and marginal communities – into plural societies; regulation of interethnic relations in minority protection at national level and international law; the problems of identity, especially ethnic identities, the expressing and social role of identities, individual and collective identities, phenomena of multi-layer and multiple identity, identities in the context of integration processes; education in ethnically plural surroundings, particularly minority and bilingual schooling or education; multiculturalism; cultural and ethnic policy and above all the concepts of multi- and/ or interculturalism, etc.
