Abstract
New scientific knowledge and high technology are widely exploited in the search for new modern medicines. Moreover, the biotech boom has been largely stimulated by the pharmaceutical prospects of their implementation. As a consequence, not only chemical synthesis and classical drug formulation but also more advanced methods are required regarding the development of new drug delivery systems. In fact, what is needed is pertinent information on the kinetics of drug effects and its potential dependence on the rate and time of drug input. Therefore, special attention should be given to investigation of transport and interactions of drugs in systems of increasing complexity considering the diversity of structural and interfacial characteristics to identify the factors influencing mechanisms and kinetics of the processes. Liposomes, nanoparticles, adhesive polymer micelles and microspheres can be viewed as modern carriers for controlled and targeting drug delivery. To achieve that goal successfully, more specific biopharmaceutical research and development is needed. On that basis the research programme is oriented towards the study of interfacial phenomena, diffussion of drugs in dispersion media, drug transport and biotransformation in biosystems, drug incorporation in carriers, drug stability before and after formulation, and design of rational dosage in defined disease conditions in connection with pharmacoepidemiological and pharmacoeconomical aspects of drug treatments.
