Abstract
In the interest of environmental protection, wastewater treatment facilities today must meet increasingly stringent quality standards, with nearly constant efficiency. Aerated biofilter (fixed biomass) and SBR (suspended biomass) are a compact biological wastewater treatment processes with a high flexibility. Biodegradation of organics, nitrification and denitrification are possible applications. Kinetic studies of organics and nitrogen elimination reactions, with the regard to the local effluent quality requirements, will provide design parameters for industrial wastewater treatment plants. Poor water quality is known to be a great problem in many areas in the world and use of that water may have adverse effects on people and aquatic organisms. Quality assessment of surface water is necessary to define key problems. The research studies of surface waters are directed to integrate environmental impact or risk assessment and management of industrial discharges. The reactions between atmospheric solid particles (aerosols) and trace gases (e.g., SO2, NOx) yielding the acidic atmospheric species will be studied. Kinetic studies of selected reactions in aqueous and heterogeneous systems performed under controlled conditions will provide additional scientific information that is relevant for estimating the noxious effects on the environment. Chemical characterisation of environmentally interesting materials (first of all atmospheric aerosols and waste waters) will be performed by modern instrumental techniques (HPIC, ICP-AES, ICP-MS, etc.). For special applications new analytical methods and procedures will be developed, if necessary, also in co-operation with other research groups.
