Abstract
The group's scientific and research work is orientated towards holistic development of information systems (IS). It addresses several inter-connected areas: methodological aspects of IS, databases and data warehouses development; quality assurance strategies; information technology support for inter-organisational business operations; design and construction of embedded systems; reliability assurance and security of embedded systems; evaluation and improvement of process and architecture models; IS integration methods; use of intelligent systems, agents and automatic programming techniques for the IS reliability improvement; security aspects of IS development; data and databases security; efficiency of classification algorithms for the construction of data warehouses and integration initiation for information quality improvement. Methodological aspects of IS development address the development and definition of new, more effective techniques, methods and methodologies of business process modelling, requirements analysis, architecture design, implementation, verification and validation of IS. The emphasis is on the object- and component-oriented approach, and on the services-based architecture with the semantic component and context- and aspect-dependent behaviour. One of the key issue is assurance of information services integration, which address also the next key issue of efficiency improvement: re-use, for which the formalization on the higher level of abstraction (ideas, patterns, frameworks, components and heuristics) is done by introducing various repositories, location, identification and application solution mechanisms. Methodological research offers sound base for the methods and mechanisms definitions to support the information technology in inter-organisational business operations, primarily between businesses, but also for customers and employees. The main goal is the construction of inter-organisational integration based on the existing standards of web services and the enhancement of web services by semantic component. The final goal is automatisation of all levels: definition of business processes, definition of cooperation profiles, electronic contracts definition and business operations execution. The attention is focused on the standards of European Union, primarily SEEM (Single European Electronic Market) and on the definition of application methods in Slovenia. The security aspects orient towards quality assurance of IS development and assurance of data quality. The research group traditionally dedicate much attention to quality and continues with the research on definition of new approaches to introduce the quality systems into the informatics sphere of activity and on definition of formal methods for program processes modelling. In this manner, the research continues on the quantitative evaluation of program processes and data quality. Furthermore, the development of distributed services architectures is focused which are independent of platform and/or transformation mechanisms; in this context the model based architectures definition possibilities are addressed, that solve the problem of heterogeneous application platforms and their fast development. In the scope of IS data aspects research (databases, data warehouses and data mining) the preference is given to information production processes and their improvement with the consideration of structured data development and analysis procedure at the level of an organized system. In the scope of knowledge based systems research the focus continues on the development of models for effective project management support, definition and evaluation of methods based on fuzzy logic, intelligent agents, operations research and artificial intelligence. The development searches for sources in semantic enhancement of services architectures and implementation of artificial intelligence methods.
Significance for science
In the period from 2004 until 2008, we have conducted research in the field of software-size estimation, with a formal basis for functional size measurement - FSM. In the field of efficient distributed systems, we have analyzed the efficiency of the two most important models for distributed computing for the Java platform: web services and RMI. In the field of program engineering, we have defined methods for identifying appropriate design patterns, in the field of decision models, we have researched the significance of decision models for negotiations in e-commerce. Moreover, in the field of business process modelling, we have defined a new methodology for large work processes. In the field of programming frameworks, our research included factors which influence the acceptance of open-source web frameworks among developers. In the field of the semantic web, the use of semantic web technologies for the development of project groups was researched. A new methodology for military information systems was developed. The methodology was fully adapted to the needs of the subscriber and was prepared in electronic format. Members of the research programme have also been active in the development of a methodology for improving knowledge management for the better management of European projects, including a qualifying program and certification. The research, achievements and results of the group’s work of several years in the field of integration methodologies and consolidation of information solutions and services resulted in an invitation from the Oracle corporation for a member of the group to participate in the development of the SOA Maturity Model. In the field of data technologies we have conducted research data modelling for business reporting, particularly in the field of data preparation which is a part of the ETL process. We have defined ways to assure quality in databases and studied the influence of domain knowledge on information quality. We have conducted research in the field of classification models with regard to their accuracy (efficiency). In the field of real-time systems, we have implemented solutions to sense errors in embedded systems, the recognition of communication protocols and on theoretical aspects of real-time system design. In the field of error sensing, we improved the cell monitoring model, which was implemented in an FPGA circuit, efficiently catching and reporting errors in the control system. In the field of real-time systems design, we have defined a UML pattern for dynamic application configuration that operates in real time. Moreover, we conducted a survey of evaluation methods for the QoS properties of real time systems. It was proven that a comprehensive survey of their nature must be varied out and therefore we defined performance criteria and a general classification model. An international book was published by Springer entitled Distributed embedded control systems. Results that were significant for the development of science can be found in several scientific publications in journals and at conferences, books and textbooks. From the years 2004 until 2008, the research programme has had 35 citations, 28 of which appear in Web of Science and 7 in the ACM digital library (auto-citations not included). The article with the most citations (19 times) was the article by V. Podgorelec, P. Kokol, B. Stiglic, I. Rozman: Decision trees: an overview and their use in medicine, Journal of Medical Systems, Kluwer Academic/Plenum Press, Vol. 26, Num. 5, pp. 445-463. Due to the methodology of the ARRS, the research programme has published 54 articles classified in 1.01 Original Scientific Article (22 articles in the SCI JCR journals) and 158 papers on scientific conferences in the period from 2004 until 2008. Moreover, the members of the research programme have published 7 international scientific books, which were published by recognized international publishers, like Springer and Packt Publishing.
Significance for the country
Beside all the universal aspects of the group's research work results, they are of a specific importance for Slovenia. Primarily, the results will help Slovenian companies to improve their maturity and quality of both the software development and maintenance processes. An important aspect is the capability of method and process adaptation to the needs and requirements of a specific (Slovene) environment. The research results will allow companies to adopt new standards faster. This leads to the unification of used approaches and technologies with the trends of a broader working environment (primarily European Union), and in a long-term a better competitive position and existence. It has to be considered, that not only software development companies are influenced by the e-commerce, but practically all branches of businesses; additionally, attention for new legislation is needed. The research results will also enable companies to develop their decision support models, both from a business and a production points of view. Information extraction from data is the key factor in the quest for improving the decision quality; in this sense also for the competitive position of companies. The introduction of new knowledge to companies, performed primarily through the COT (Centre for Object Technology), will enable companies to generate new ideas which will hopefully lead to new business opportunities. Additionally, new knowledge will allow companies to consistently develop new, innovative solutions with a higher added value. With a renewed force of Slovenian process industry an increased need for knowledge and experience about embedded systems design has arisen. In the past, in this area Slovenia have had a comparative advantage regarding the developing countries, because of the developed industry; successful research of the state-of-the-art aspects in this domain can also contribute to this advantage. Research and development results will also contribute to the enrichment of Slovenian professional terminology and vocabulary. The group transfers its results, cognitions and achievements into the practice, both by publications as well as by enforced knowledge transfer and expansion mechanisms.
