Abstract
The proposed research program covers the full scope of the information systems’ (IS) domain. It addresses the key areas of development and management of information solutions and services, focusing on the development of new approaches, methods, technologies and / or concepts also in areas such as internet of things, mobile solutions and services, cloud computing. We will also address the factors that significantly affect the successful implementation, management, operation, governance and acceptance of innovative IS/IT solutions and services based on information and communication technologies (ICT). The proposed research program represents the continuation and upgrade of current research work of the participating researchers. It covers the following topics: - Contemporary and efficient IS architectures based on service oriented and event-driven architectural styles, suitable for the models and concepts of cloud computing and ubiquitous access to / from mobile devices and sensors with automatic adaptation to the context of usage; - Advanced business process management, which includes efficient modeling, automation, integration and optimization of processes; - Effective approaches to the design and multi-platform development of IS/IT solutions and services - Models for evaluating the quality of IS/IT services and solutions based on existing and newly defined and validated quantitative and qualitative metrics adapted to new technologies, platforms and processes; - Intelligent systems with emphasis on machine learning, intelligent analysis and semantic data integration, decision-making models and aspects related to the processing and management of big data; - Security and trust for secure data transmission, authentication, probative value of data, preventing unauthorized access, ensuring trust and privacy in the development, deployment and use of information systems and security aspects of the internet of things; - Cyber-physical systems, which represent the next dimension in the development of safety-critical embedded systems, including approaches and solutions, and the strict real-time concept; - Innovation service ecosystems and aspects that facilitate and promote innovations based on service platforms, user-oriented development, convergence of technologies and services, and understanding of the implications of the introduction and use of advanced ICT solutions and services. The proposed research program takes into account (or considers) up-to-date guidelines and research policy in the field of informatics, as well as approaches to promote innovation in the field of ICT, with respect to emerging technologies, which promote the development of interoperable, secure, reliable, on open standards-based service platforms and ecosystems.
Significance for science
We presume that our research activities and objectives will impact the development of science in the field of information systems and as well as in related research areas. The research within the field of intelligent systems will contribute to the development of new models, methods and algorithms for intelligent data analysis of complex, big data from heterogeneous data sources, as well as for the efficient implementation of expert systems and knowledge bases. The research of cyber-physical systems will impact the efficiency of pervasive solutions and their acceptance in business and social environments. The research also addresses the main challenges of current European agenda - “Horizons 2020”. Research in the field of security and trust will result in new and improved models, approaches and procedures to ensure secure exchange of information and its probative value and to prevent acts of non-repudiation and ensure security and trust in systems using sensor data. The results will also produce a better understanding of user behavior and service provider behavior in the field of privacy that will further affect the development of new models and methods, and the design of secure service oriented architectures. The contribution of research in the field of IS architectures and performances will reflect in new and improved models for estimating the level of information solution’s flexibility. Addressing reuse and integration objectives, the proposed models will present theoretical foundations for constructing and empirical evaluation of models and methods for estimating the flexibility level of existing solutions. Meta research in the field of the development of new information solutions will results in new aggregated knowledge in the fields of defects prediction, quality of mobile solutions development, software product lines and design of software solutions. Systematic literature reviews will also form a solid basis for new directions of the research. New scientific results are also anticipated in the vertical domains related to interdisciplinary fields of software development. Research in the field of information - communication processes will result in new and upgraded models of conversations and collaborations, which will be adapted to new communicating solutions and therefore suited for implementation into innovation ecosystems. While being founded on standardized notations (BPMN), we anticipate that the results will be reusable in other solutions as well domains. New approaches for measuring and managing complexity of process models will be useful for empirical software engineering in general. Integrating mobile, cloud and social solutions with business process management will facilitate new ideas and collaborations with other research areas.
Significance for the country
Socio-economic dimensions of the research program are visible through the impact on development, quality assurance and information system management. Results will increase efficiency of business processes and innovative improvements with notable participation of industry and of the public sector. Considering the socio-economic impact of the research program it is worth stressing the importance of already successful regional applied solutions (e.g. @life, eCall4All, ADORA). Additional research, based on user experience and state-of-the-art technologies will foster scientific work in enterprises (e.g. use of innovative user interfaces in business and social software). However scientific excellence of the research program is the key-enabling factor for socio-economic impacts (e.g. with investigation of user acceptance of new IT solutions prior to real-world deployment). The list of socio-economic dimensions/impacts related to broader national and European goals is as follows: (1) Knowledge transfer aiming at reinforcement of innovative potential in ICT sectors (e.g. implications of the research of innovation ecosystems) in line with goals of the Resolution on Research and Innovation Strategy of Slovenia. (2) Quality of service enhancement for ICT dependent non-ICT companies, related to the first pillar of Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE): Single Digital Market (e.g. with the improvement of effectiveness and efficiency of business process management). (3) Improved and increased user participation and of public administration operations transparency (DAE reference: Interoperability and standards, Trust and Security)(e.g. with the use of understandable process models and with the integration of social software concepts and business process management). (4) Increased use and reuse of public sector information (e.g. with the use of pervasive computing and new ways of communicating) as a stimulate binding element of public administration and new and innovative SME’s (DAE reference: Interoperability and standards, Trust and Security). The proposed research program responds to the challenges addressed in the seventh pillar of DAE: ICT-Enabled Benefits for EU Society. With the proposed program the high standing of professional profiles are also straightened. These are mostly engineering-related with strong multidisciplinary communication with those in medicine (e.g. the use of intelligent systems and big data in the field of medicine), social sciences (e.g. user acceptance related research) and even culture. With enhancements of existing research and addressing new domains (e.g. internet of things and cyber-physical systems), the research group responds to the need for the interrelation of social environment and of scientific results made evident in EU Horizon 2020 preparatory documents. Aiming at this the research group shows its capability for multidisciplinary and immediate use of results in innovative service oriented systems and converging effects.
