Abstract
Research and development in the programme group of the research programme 'Heat and Mass Transfer' is oriented to the field of Process engineering and energy research. The research programme results from the previous and expected activities of the colleborating members in the programme group. The basic research work is carried out and will be continued in the future in the fields of Heat and mass transfer, especially in the segments, which are crucial for the understanding of the transfer phenomena in solids and fluids, i.e. different energy transformation processes by heating and cooling. The modelling of the processes will be supported and checked with the measurements on the laboratory-scale models and also on the real systems.
Significance for science
Scientific fields of efficient energy use, ecology and optimization of industrial processes are becoming more and more significant for sustainable development of the world economy. Research in strategic fields, one of which is supply of basic human resources that are important for individual’s normal living, are in today’s world of utmost importance. Basic human needs cover safety, reliable energy supply and its efficient usage, environmental protection, uninterrupted food supply, etc. Thus efficient energy supply in connection with ecologically acceptable processes and systems is a primal concern of each national programme in developed countries. Each year more and more researchers are being involved with a development of new refrigerating, heating and process technologies, which use natural substances and can be driven by waste heat in the trigeneration systems. Especially, research in the field of magnetic refrigeration is very important for the development of science in the area of heat and mass transfer, since this field is altogether relatively new. Beside others we can explicitly mention the following contributions to the world book of science: - description of heat and mass transfer in magnetic field; - physical-mathematical principle of reciprocity – application in the field of flow metrology and theory of weighted vectors; - combined fluid-solid system – development of numerical methods; - development of innovative system for the local ventilation of the working place; - research in understanding of mechanisms of heat and mass transfer on micro level, which is the basic condition for knowledge transfer into industrial applications on the micro and nano level. Regarding our international connections and international collaborations on various projects, we are sure that described research activities have a wide meaning for a development of science in the world. Past results of our work (projects, published papers, conference presentations, citations, …) assure us that we are and still will in the future give an important imprint to the world knowledge treasury.
Significance for the country
Orientation of our research group is such that we strive for achievement of strategic goals of innovative and knowledge-based economy, which transforms and uses energy in a way that produces lower CO2 emissions and thus contributes to higher competitiveness and sustainability of Slovenia. Reliable, efficient and qualitative energy supply and its consumption must be focused on co-natural development. With help of a development of new innovative energetic and process technologies, and enforcement of ecologically protective regulations we can achieve reduction of gaseous, liquid and solid waste and thus green house gas potential, ozone depleting substances, water pollution and thus keep and improve bio diversity. Due to a socio-economic and cultural connections with European countries and adaptation of Slovenian regulation towards European one, we also have to adapt accordingly in the field of energy supply and efficient energy use. Programme of our research group was designed and will be closely followed in the tracks of European scientific and technological development. Development and successful implementation of magnetic refrigeration can represent a major breakthrough for Slovenia among other developed countries. Efficient heating and cooling systems have important effects, especially for economical development of Slovenia. Reasonable planning, building and maintenance of tunnels contribute significantly to the traffic safety. Sustainable development of internal environment of buildings is also economically and socially important for every developed country and significantly contribute to the decreasing of the absenteeism and increasing of the work effectiveness. Market value of contemporary measuring equipment is due to specific metrological requirements very expensive and many times unavailable. Development of our own algorithms for additional improvements and identification of metrological characteristics of process measuring equipment, especially in the context of qualitative production process, has its own extraordinary value. Expected collaboration with European and world research institutes in the scope of the programme will bring increased added value to Slovenian industry with which members of the research group are cooperating. This is why research of our programme group is important for technological development of Slovenian economy. Expected collaboration with European and world research institutes in the scope of the programme will bring increased added value to Slovenian industry with which members of the research group are cooperating. This is why research of our programme group is important for technological development of Slovenian economy. Group continues to keep close collaboration with DARS – Slovenian Company for state roads, DDC – State company for roads, industry such as Hidria, Kolektor, Gorenje, KIV Vransko and institutes that deal with mentioned fields of research. Special attention will be focused on the field of flow metrology in Slovenia (for example: setup of metrologically defined testing facilities) and education of future engineers for the development of mentioned profession. Support of research group also represents a support to a further enforcement of established Slovenian scientists abroad, which consequently means strengthening of Slovenian national identity. With increased traffic safety we will contribute to the conservation of natural wealth and also preservation of human lives. Realised programme represents a developing process of integration of successful companies in the field of sustainable use of energy sources and environmental services.
