Abstract
Macroeconomic econometric analysis of development, growth, external and internal balance of the Slovenian economy is an empirical study of a small extremely open economy, the member of EU in the process of joining European monetary union. The results should serve as a direct support of the science to economic agents and to economic and development policy. Special attention is given to long run sources of Slovenian and European competitiveness on the global market as well as to their short term effects on GDP growth, employment, current account balance, and inflation. In this framework, the analysis focuses on specific problems or sectors (liberalization and deregulation of energy sector, impacts of world oil prices, highway and departments construction, investment and acccumulation regime, effects of acquisitions on beverages market, characteristics of insurance market, competitiveness of financial sector, real estate market, financing of municipalities e.t.c.) while dealing with the whole Slovenian economy and using econometric forecasts (as an informational support for a sound economic policy in Slovenia).
Significance for science
Members of the EIPF research team have been involved in a gradual approach to the transition of a small open economy from a socialist market system (Illyrian socialism) to a contemporary market economy. In the implementation process, their analyses supported Slovenian economic policy. Though the researchers published their findings abroad, their major aim was influencing actual economic policy. In the process of program implementation we are looking forward to publish in the following fields: accession of a small open economy to a monetary union; the impact of the energy market integration in the EU on the energy sector in the member states; financial system development of member states under the provisions of a monetary union; dynamics of relevant singular goods markets in EMU member states; fiscal policy alternatives for stabilization and stimulation of development.
Significance for the country
Economic activity in a contemporary development stage in the companies or in a country as a whole is not possible without adequate information basis provided by the results of continued macroeconomic empirical analyses. The results of the »Macroeconomic econometric analysis of development, growth and internal and external stability of Slovenian economy« program will therefore make possible that business decisions of the companies and decisions of economic and development policy on the country level will ensure stable economic growth based on intensive development. In this framework, one part of econometric analyses will serve to assess the effects and proposals of stable financing of major infrastructural investments in Slovenia. At their work, the members of the EIPF research team develop new empirical approaches to the analysis of macroeconomic activities and structures. By means of computer technology their findings are directly accessible to the global economic science.
