Abstract
Macroeconomic econometric analysis of development, growth, external and internal balance of the Slovenian economy is an empirical study of a small extremely open economy, the member of EU in the process of joining European monetary union. The results should serve as a direct support of the science to economic agents and to economic and development policy. Special attention is given to long run sources of Slovenian and European competitiveness on the global market as well as to their short term effects on GDP growth, employment, current account balance, and inflation. In this framework, the analysis focuses on specific problems or sectors (liberalization and deregulation of energy sector, impacts of world oil prices, highway and departments construction, investment and acccumulation regime, effects of acquisitions on beverages market, characteristics of insurance market, competitiveness of financial sector, real estate market, financing of municipalities e.t.c.) while dealing with the whole Slovenian economy and using econometric forecasts (as an informational support for a sound economic policy in Slovenia).
Significance for science
The results of the analyses within the program contribute to the development of economic theory indirectly, as in most cases the studies are empirical. They bring some theoretical conclusions which are sometimes in odd with theoretically self-evident truths on the mechanism of the economy.
Significance for the country
Most studies deal directly with specific economic problems in Slovenian economy thus in a small extremely open economy and in which economic policies and economic system are to great extent imposed from outside. It is therefore important to find solutions enable long run economic and social development.
