Abstract
Several published studies, have shown that prenylated flavonoids from hops, particularly xanthohumol exhibit cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects against tumour cell lines, exhibit anti-inflammatory effects due to the inhibition of cyclooxigenases 1 and 2 and act as free radical scavengers. The studies conducted at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana and national Institute of Biology showed that xanthohumol exerts antimutagenic activity particularly against carcinogenic heterocyclic amines. These properties indicate that xanthohumol can prevent cancer initiation and development; therefore it can be used as the basis for development of food and pharmaceutical products with elevated content of xanthohumol for cancer prevention.
The aim of the proposed project is to develop a technological procedure for preparation of biologicaly active hop extract enriched with xanthohumol, for industrial production. The enriched extract will be standardized to the xanthohumol content and will have assured biologycal activity. There fore we will also develop appropriate analytical methodology for xanthohumol determination. The biological activity will be determined by measuring antimutagenic activity of the extracts against heterocyclic amines. Additional molecular and biological studies of antimutagenic activity of xanthohumola and the extract will be conducted with test systems with human cell lines to elucidate the mechanisms of antimutagenic activity, which will be the basis for assessment of the preventive effectiveness in humans.
Biologically active hop extract, enriched with xanthohumol will be commercially used for further development of functional food products (beer, other drinks) and pharmaceutical products with cancer preventive properties.
