Abstract
The theoretical origin of the multidisciplinary oriented research programme is knowledge development, needed for holistic understanding of the production role in industrial companies. For up-to-date scientific research work connections between technical and managerial scientific areas are needed for studying production impact on the companies competitiveness. For this reason, realisation of planned objectives will be implemented by incorporation of industrial engineering, metrology, supported by quality management and production and operations management research concepts. Industrial engineering research is focused on development of the quantitative models for production planning and control. Research in the metrology field is focused into quality improvement of the standard basis and its international comparability. One of the most important goals of this research is also introduction of nanometrology by using video systems and laser interferometry. The aim of production and operations management research content is studying the impact of the manufacturing capabilities and key technologies on the competitive capabilities of manufacturing companies and industrial clusters. Planned goals realisation is in progress, in accordance to the announcement. In the period 2004-2005 the heuristic model of the instrument for decision support at development capabilities direction in organisational systems was developed. Several research studies were performed for metrology as well as for production and operations management (Manufacturing Visions, CREATE project, international research Innovation in manufacturing, research about Strategic crises in companies and organizations, survey research about Business Process Reengineering in large and medium sized companies, action research of industrial clusters). Some of the results are already published and some will be yet in the international journals with JCR impact factor (International journal of advanced manufactoring technologies, Journal of mechanical engineering, International journal of production research).
Significance for science
Production management Research activities within research programme aim at achieving internationally comparable scientific research results. In science a process of knowledge specialisation is more and more accompanyed by the process of knowledge integration. Production management as a subarea of technical disciplines has during its evolution alligned with management science. Production management can be therefore identifiead as an area, that evolved when technical and managerial sciences interwind. Integration emerged as a result of the need to understand phenomenon that appear in R&D and technologically advanced manufacturing companies. In the future we can expect even stronger combinations of technical and irganisational knowledge. The engineers have to be aware of the tre meaning of innovation – how to transfer an idea into commercialised business. There is a larger set of scientific journals that cover the integartion of engineering and organisational knoweldge and direct the research activities of the proposed research programme: Journal of Operations Management, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Technovation in International Journal of Project Management. The existence of mentioned journals proves that production management presents relevant scientific area with its own conceptual knowledge and scientific identity. Creation and transfer of new knowledge produced by the researcher of the programme will have a large importance for the further evolotion of the science and that will be applicable in the frame of ensuring efficiency and higher competitiveness of SMEs. In the scope of dominating technical area (according to research content) the pluralism has a different meaning than in humanistics or sociology since the basis for analysis are not individual findings, but empirically or mathematically proven facts. A special superiority of the research programme is publishing of international scientific journal International Journal of Simulation Modelling. Results of our research have already been presented to public in scientific journals; scientific monographs and in the future we expect a significant rise of the publications. Dimensional metrology Calibration of laser frequency by primary standard is not a novelty in the measurement science, but only highest-ranked national metrology institutions are capable to performing it. Also they are still noticing a number of unmanaged influence factors in the calibration process. In Slovenia this field of scientific research is completely unpracticed, that is way a respected scientific achievements are extremely large. Equivalent metrological communication on the primary level will be possible in the global metrological community, while Slovenian users of laser measurements will gain new base of knowledge for diminishing the measurement uncertainty and widening the laser applications in new fields of use. By integration of laser interferometry with coordinate measuring machines new measurement system for calibrations will arise, where new mathematic models for measurement uncertainty evaluation will represent a scientific achievement. Such mathematic models are not known in Slovenia yet, also new algorithms for on-line and real-time data acquisition will be developed. New scientific knowledge based on extensive experimental work will enable widening of use of laser interferometer as well as coordinate measuring machines.
Significance for the country
The research programme is the only one in SLO that integrates technical-technological knowledge in production engineering with production management, therefore it combines mechanical engineering and business and organisational knowledge. As such it is fasten to the strategic management and especially project management for strategy and projects implementation, not only in connection with production but wider with holistic planning in companies and extensive environment. The research group has a unique integrating, interdisciplinary role with results that contribute to increase of competitiveness of manufacturing companies, to taking advantage of business opportunities and sustainable development of Slovenia. Our companies are aware of the importance of the research programme, as well are foreign R&D institutions with which we have excellent partnerships. The inclusion of researchers with different professional and scientific background is a necessary condition for an optimum use of the modern analytical and research methods and interpretation of research findings. The concepts that will be developed will beside theoretical adequacy (research in real companies) focused on applicative solution finding in manufacturing companies. The research results will therefore contribute to increase of competitiveness of companies and foster building innovative, efficient and on knowledge-based economy with long term stable growth. Competitiveness of Slovenian manufacturing companies to a large extent depends on their capabilities to integrate advanced manufacturing technologies and manage technological data and information flows as well as successful implementation of investment projects for assuring production. The research results will help with building knowledge that will enable transfer of R&D and technological results in competitive advantage and seizing business opportunities. In the future we will be faced with changes and challenges in different spheres of operations. Companies not investing in e-volution (use of virtual environment), in higher productivity and innovations will not be between the winners and their survival will be uncertain. Using ecological technologies, environmental-friendly processes and practices will give an assurance of new–sustainable oriented economy. Here we can see the role of project management because the project oriented strategy implementation as a project production is becoming inevitably in companies and other environment. Project management competences are of crucial importance for acquiring European financial funds and for preparation and implementation important national projects, written in national strategy till the year 2023. We have to emphasise that the research programme is a basis for development of interdisciplinary study programme Industrial Management that is currently implemented according to Bologna process by Faculty of mechanical engineering and Faculty of Economics & Business. In the field of measurement science, results of scientific work (especially new measurement standards and calibration methods in connection with primary measurement standard, not present in SLO until now) will enable rise of level of international comparability of calibration results and measurement systems. Better integration of Slovenian metrology system into global metrology infrastructure will be enabled. By higher reputation of Slovenian metrology also Slovenian industry will easier resolve matters in foreign trade, where product conformity is needed (e.q. CE-mark). Widening and enhancement of measurement standards base are going to enhance industrial capabilities in the field of highly geometrically pretentious products, what is of great importance for increasing number of SLO automotive industry suppliers, where demands of technical specification ISO TS 16949 and other standards in this branch, concerning reliable measurements protocols and documents as quality conformance proofs are very high.
