Abstract
The research programme (RP) Advanced concepts of production management and dimensional metrology is the only one in Slovenia that integrates technical-technological knowledge in production engineering with production management, therefore it combines mechanical engineering and business and organisational knowledge. Therefore, RP is with its contents and results still very important for Slovenian economy. The production management and industrial management as two extremely inter-disciplinary areas are essential to raise innovation level in Slovenian companies, since both areas deal with new high added value product and services development, technical and organisational innovation and management of production. Slovenian companies have many reserves in organising their technical and business processes. With the knowledge from production management area they will have the possibility to improve added value of their products. Research in the inter-disciplinary area, where technical and organisation aspect intertwine, enables higher flexibility with adapting to changes in business environment, ensures holistic understanding of production systems performance from static and dynamic point of view, as well as achieving competitive advantage of manufacturing and technically oriented service companies. Project management is becoming prevalent managerial tool in companies and other organisations. Only with carefully planned and effectively implemented projects we will be able to improve companies’ and national competitiveness level, implement strategies and raise money form European financial funds. At the same time we are approaching nanotechnology period, where metrology will have one of the leading roles in the development of new products and technologies. The goals of RP are aligned with the requirements of international, European and national standards for quality management (e. g. ISO 9001, ISO TS 16949 for automotive industry, EN 9100 for aerospace industry and ISO/IEC 17000 standards). These standards require alignment of basic (production, service), managerial and supporting processes in the company. The areas of production management and metrology have been integrated in order to be capable of managing link between managerial and operations processes that have to continuously measured and improved. Previously mentioned standards for measuring processes require specific metrology equipment that our RP is capable of managing and maintain at the world-class level. All described topics in the RP are suitable for research of different phenomena in described research fields, thus we are able to publish our findings in international journals and other scientific publications. The results of our research projects contribute to enhancement of Slovenian and international knowledge.
Significance for science
Production management
Research activities within research programme aim at achieving internationally comparable scientific research results. In science a process of knowledge specialisation is more and more accompanied by the process of knowledge integration. Production management as a subarea of technical disciplines has during its evolution aligned with management science. Production management can be therefore identified as an area, that evolved when technical and managerial sciences intertwined. Integration emerged as a result of the need to understand phenomenon that appear in R&D and technologically advanced manufacturing companies. In the future we can expect even stronger combinations of technical and organisational knowledge. The engineers have to be aware of the meaning of innovation – how to transfer an idea into commercialised business. Project management as an interdisciplinary field is of crucial importance as project implementation requires integration and aligned cooperation of different disciplines. Project management is also faced with a rapid scientific development, that being consequence of its importance in companies and other organisations. The current project management concepts and models must be theoretically strengthen and adjust the project management development to all project types and to all relevant project environments, considering also change and risk management and the current impact of business environment.
There is a larger set of scientific journals that cover the integration of engineering and organisational knowledge and direct the research activities of the proposed research programme: Journal of Operations Management, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Technovation, International Journal of Project Management, Project Management Journal etc. The existence of mentioned journals proves that production management presents relevant scientific area with its own conceptual knowledge and scientific identity. Creation and transfer of new knowledge produced by the researcher of the programme will have a large importance for the further evolution of the science and that will be applicable in the frame of ensuring efficiency and higher competitiveness of SMEs. In the scope of dominating technical area (according to research content) the pluralism has a different meaning than in humanistic or sociology since the basis for analysis are not individual findings, but empirically or mathematically proven facts. A special superiority of the research programme is publishing of international scientific journal International Journal of Simulation Modelling, where our research programme member is Editor-in-Chief. In the last period (2009-2012) we have drastically increased the number of our publications, where the results of our research have already been presented to public in scientific journals; scientific monographs and in the future we expect a further rise of the publications.
Measurement science
Calibration of laser frequency by primary standard represents the highest level of metrological capacity of length measurement. The equipment used for this calibration represents the primary realization of length and requires constant metrological control, which must be supported with advanced knowledge in the field of laser radiation and optics. This segment of the knowledge in LTM is already at a very high level, by further upgrading it we will bring it even closer to the most developed European measurement institutes. Upgrade of the LI-CMM integration by development of new methods of evaluation of optical path of the laser beam measurement is an original scientific work, not yet accomplished in Slovenia. The same is true for the method of calibration of laser interferometers by comparison, which will also include the development of devices with specific metrological requests. New sc
Significance for the country
The research programme Advanced concepts of production management and dimensional metrology is the only one in Slovenia that integrates technical-technological knowledge in production engineering with production management, therefore it combines mechanical engineering and business and organisational knowledge. As such it is fasten to the strategic management and especially project management for strategy and projects implementation, not only in connection with production but wider with holistic planning in companies and extensive environment. The research group performs a unique integrating, interdisciplinary role with results that contribute to increase of competitiveness of manufacturing companies, to taking advantage of business opportunities and sustainable development of Slovenia. Our companies are aware of the importance of the research programme, as well are foreign R&D institutions with which we have excellent partnerships. The inclusion of researchers with different professional and scientific background is a necessary condition for an optimum use of the modern analytical and research methods and interpretation of research findings. The concepts that will be developed will beside theoretical adequacy (research in real companies) focused on applicative solution finding in manufacturing companies. The research results will therefore contribute to increase of competitiveness of companies and foster building innovative, efficient and on knowledge-based economy with long term stable growth. Competitiveness of Slovenian manufacturing companies to a large extent depends on their capabilities to integrate advanced manufacturing technologies and manage technological data and information flows as well as successful implementation of investment projects for assuring production. The research results will help with building knowledge that will enable transfer of R&D and technological results in competitive advantage and seizing business opportunities.
The results of our projects will be directly used in the following companies, where we cooperate with their researchers: research field A – Versor, Gorenje, B to D – Cimos, Veplas, E to G – Gorenje, Versor, H – Geberit, I – Cimos, Gorenje, K – TBP Lenart, L - Palfinger.
Based on the mentioned topics we can recognise the role of project management because the project oriented strategy implementation as a project production is becoming inevitably in companies and other environment. Project management competences are of crucial importance for acquiring European (financial) means and for preparation and implementation important national projects, written in national strategy till the year 2023. We have to emphasise that the research programme is a basis for development of interdisciplinary study programme Industrial Management that is currently implemented according to Bologna process by Faculty of mechanical engineering and Faculty of Economics & Business.
Measurement science
In the field of measurement science, results of scientific work - especially new measurement standards and calibration methods - will enable rise of the level of international comparability of calibration results (especially of primary standard) and measurement systems. Better integration of Slovenian metrology system into global metrology infrastructure will be enabled. By higher reputation of Slovenian metrology also Slovenian industry will easier resolve matters in foreign trade, where product conformity is needed. Widening and enhancement of measurement standards base are going to enhance industrial capabilities in the field of highly geometrically pretentious products, what is of great importance for increasing number of high-tech Slovenian automotive industry suppliers.
