Significance for science
The program on "Virtue-based approaches in theoretical and practical philosophy" both consolidated and reactualised the importance of philosophical and non-philophical meaning and usability of studying the concepts of virtue and values not only in the sphere of ethics as a philosophical discipline, but in also in the field of philosophical research withing the context of epistemology and logic based from on the one hand, as well as practical dimensions of philosophy (ethics, political philosophy) on the other. It has been shown that exactly the virtue is one of those anchorages in science, the latter being always enabled through the ethical practice, thus making the relevant also an approach in which we can look at the scientific ethics also from the perspective of the theory of the virtues. Continuous development and progress of science and technology in itself produces new consideration not only on the ethical issues, that science and society constantly demand to be adequately resolved, but also on the ethics of scientific work itself and finally about the moral commitments of scientists. Therefore, the future prospects of the development and ultimatively also the intrinsic value of science depends on a successful theoretical and scientific knowledge pledging on the status and disposition of properties, such as virtues. The science itself becomes fully dependent on ethical individuals – scientists and their actions.
Significance for the country
The published results, articles, conferences and completed education (master, doctorate) in the framework of the program suggest that the study goes beyond the classic idea of "uselessness" of philosophical discourse. Expectations of knowledge and the search for solutions in the sphere of unsatisfactory resolved ethical issues are something that in society and in the national context raises serious attention. Transforming the research findings on virtues both in the sphere of ethics and epistemology, as well as other philosophical disciplines, is therefore inextricably linked with the search for answers in the social and national context and has direct implications in the realm of ethics, aesthetics and political philosophy in a series of dilemmas that are crucial for the future of particular disciplines, also the society and the state as such. It is the wrong impression that it is possible to discern the ethical discussion from their theoretical justification and practical, still arbitrarily applicability, the latter being only loosely connected with the former. Issues in the field of moral philosophy, ethics and epistemology are therefore necessarily correlative with open dilemmas faced in the immediacy of practical everyday life, even at the level of building stable and democratic political system beyond its loops, profanely perceived in the form of complaints about anomalies concerning crime and corruption in the time of transition. Analytical work on moral concepts and philosophical theoretical reflection are therefore even of primary interest in resolving the pressing ethical dilemmas in the country. We expect that some of the publicly presented research findings will make easier to understand and possibly to resolve numerious ethical dilemmas and also help to affirm scientific approach of its intrepretations.
