Significance for science
The importance of the research results of the research project for the development of the science is seen in the originality of theories, concepts, method of the analyses and the empirical results, which are important for the further development of the science in the areas of theory, concepts and methods of the analyses with the great number of original scientific publications in the world leading journals. These publications of the importance for the development of the science are in the areas of the project subject components in the specific areas of structural changes, micro-economic analysis and sectoral efficiency, trade specialization patterns, entrepreneurial-business and international competitive strategies, orientation of enterprises, individual economy sectors and national economies on the global efficiency, competitiveness and sustainable economic development in local environment. In the empirical analysis are used primary collected survey data with different structures of respondents, sample of micro-economic subjects, national and international time-series data, cross-section data, panel datasets and input-output tables with national accounts data. The empirical analyses are associated with the analysis of the efficiency and competitiveness, the analysis of the effects of globalization, market liberalization and entry of Slovenia into the European Union on restructuring, competitiveness and economic efficiency of micro-economic subjects and individual economic branches in the global economy as well as with the analysis of developments in international trade, restructuring, competitiveness and patterns of trade specialization, price and quality competition, determinants of international trade specialization and developments in international trade competitiveness and international comparative trade advantages in the process of sustainable economic development. The project has developed several original models and methods of economic and trade analysis, mathematical linear algebra analysis, statistical and econometric analyses, parametric and nonparametric analysis and input-output modelling which are used in the fields of the basic research project. The importance of the project results and project findings for the development of the science demonstrates and proofs the great number of different presentations all over the world, transfer of scientific knowledge and achievements to post-graduate and doctoral students with lectures and supervisions of more master and doctoral theses, and particularly the numerous and the great number of the original scientific papers, which have been published in the world leading journals with the impact factor and their citations (see also Cobiss/Sicris and the attached annex to this final report).
Significance for the country
The relevance and importance of the project results for development of Slovenia represents the analyses of structural changes, economic efficiency, restructuring of the economy, competitiveness, patterns and determinants of specialization and international trade, demands for higher education and sustainable development. Results and implications are important for understanding and monitoring of structural changes and competitiveness of the economy and society, which aims to become on a knowledge and innovation based society and for sustainable development. The research has analysed households diversifications in rural areas and sustainable development, financing of mandatory duties of municipalities, dynamics of enterprises and shadow economy, higher education demands, segmentation of electricity markets, tax competitiveness, the impact of information and communication technologies on international trade, international trade quality differentiation, structures and convergence in trade specialization, awareness and promotion of sustainable energy development and renewable sources of energy in sustainable development. The project results have been continuingly presented and published. They are in support to policy and strategy makers at the national level, enterprise managers, municipalities, institutes and other institutions in programming of financial operations. The transfer and dissemination of the project results and findings to science and practices have been conducted through presentations at seminars, forums, domestic and international conferences, scientific articles in proceedings of conferences, books, the original scientific papers in the scientific journals and several other publications. The results and findings of the project are linked with achievements of the strategy objectives. In the analyses are included structural, technological, business-entrepreneurial and qualitative-innovative modernisations of enterprises, individual branches and the economy, which are determining enterprise efficiency and global competitiveness. The high technologically intensive and by education-intensive activities have important implications on local economy and demand for high educated labour and for reallocation of labour to increase economic efficiency, quality, innovativeness and to achieve higher competitive abilities and technological restructuring of activities, protection of environment and for aiming to achieve more sustainable economic development. The research project has pointed out possible ways and measures for dealing with questions regarding economic restructuring and structural changes, allocation of resources and economic efficiency, international trade specialization, higher education demands, renewable sources of energy and sustainable development. The transfer and dissemination into the practice have been developed at different institutional levels from municipalities up to the ministries and established international scientific-technical and research cooperation with other national and international exchanges. The project results and findings have been used continues for the development of the pedagogical work at the undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral levels. In the research activities have been included the young researchers. The project activities have been linked with the preparation of the greater number of diploma and master theses and doctoral dissertations (see Cobiss). The attention has been given to students from enterprises and other economy organizations. In 2009 one of them received the Slovenian state recognition for sustainable development. The research team has received more awards and distinctions: two doctoral dissertation by the team research members were awarded for the best faculty and university doctoral dissertations. The team leader received the award from the Fund for the scientific excellence of the UP for research and development achievements in 2011.
