Significance for science
The research on ash dieback in Slovenia, which is provoked by the fungus Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus - Chalara fraxinea, has brought to the possible development of disease suppression with higher temperatures. Diseased saplings can be cured by some hours dip in hot water bath. The research increase our comprehensin of the disease development and impact in european scale with forseeing lower incidence of the disease in climatic regions with higher temperatures. The finds on variable individual resistence of the host and on differences in individual aggressiveness of the pathogen are important starting point for the search of resistant ash individuals. Acquired are the first results on sensitivity of the fungus to some fungicidal substances and to urea.
Significance for the country
The results and their transfer to professional forestry public enabled the change in forestry practice: Forestry Service Slovenia stopped investments in planting of ash, in tending operations ash is not promoted, special attention is given to less damaged ash trees in the phase of ash rejuvenation and these trees are promoted. This enables survival of more resistant hosts to the fungus Chalara fraxinea.
