Abstract
Biomedical engineering is interdisciplinary discipline which contains several basic areas of engineering, informatics, biology, chemistry and medicine. The aim of this project is application of biomedical engineering to preclinical and clinical practice. The project is split into five subprojects with the following subjects: cardiovascular systems, biomechanics, implant fabrication, medical devices development for dilatation process, and tissue engineering. The aim of the first subproject is the development of lab for computer modeling of plaque formation and progress at real patients, as well as investigation of cardiovascular stents and implants on the specific design equipment. The second subproject is related to biomechanical investigation of spinal disorders, skeletal system deformity, sports biomechanics and dental biomechanical investigation of implants. The third subproject is related to customized implant design and manufacturing for clinical use. The aim of the fourth subproject is based on the previous results and patented solutions, and is to be continued as a series of complementary R&D activities to introduce advanced systems for hydraulic dilatation in medical practice. There is high incidence of degenerative bone disease (osteoarthritis) cartilage defects in Serbia and in the developed world; detalied research in mechanotransduction pathways may be utilized for tissue engineering approaches for cartilage repair, which is a subject of the fifth subproject.
