Description
The staff of the Christian Cultural Union (KKZ) in Celovec/Klagenfurt as early as the 1950s, and in particular from 1953 when the KKZ added the ethnographic lore of Carinthia to its fields of endeavour, had been collecting documentary materials. Its activities in the field of ethnography developed strongly after a department of ethnography was established within the KKZ, for which it was necessary for the KKZ to reorganize its work in a new form. At a meeting on March 2, 1992, the KKZ approved regulations for the Urban Jarnik Institute of Slovene Ethnography (SNIUJ) and established the Institute. From 1992 to 1994 the Urban Jarnik Institute of Slovene Ethnography worked as a special organizational unit within the framework of the KKZ; on May 1994 the Urban Jarnik Ethnographic Society was set up, and since that date it has been the legal sponsor of the Urban Jarnik Institute of Slovene Ethnography.
