Abstract
Entrepreneurship is an emerging and developing research area, but its findings are of a high importance for growth and development of an economy. When bases for the proposed study are set, it is emphasized that entrepreneurship needs to be defined as a form of behavior without regard to the size of a firm and that micro factors (i.e. entrepreneurial activities and orientations) need to be focused upon. Large effects on the macro level (overall economy) can be expected on the basis of development of these entrepreneurial factors. The purpose of the study is to examine the role of entrepreneurship in economic development of Slovenia in the following entrepreneurship areas: intrapreneurship, international entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial networks, entrepreneurship support environment, venture capital, entrepreneurship education, entrepreneurship specifics in industries of the new economy and in so called transition economies. Key research goals are to discover long term cause-and-effect relationships between variables or constructs inside the models from each entrepreneurship research area under consideration and growth and profitability of enterprises. Several main hypotheses form contingency models. Hypotheses propose long-term effects of entrepreneurial characteristics and factors in different entrepreneurship areas on firm performance. Development of contingency models will highlight important new knowledge about prediction of business performance and economic growth on the basis of entrepreneurial factors and entrepreneurship antecedents. An important discovery will be the relative importance of individual factors in the models. The study will extend entrepreneurship research areas and cut virtual boundaries between these areas; a multi-area entrepreneurship research has a potential to bring new findings, which may shake the bases of one entrepreneurship research area or may enable the formation of a new sub-area on the interface between entrepreneurship research areas. The study findings and recommendations will have important implications for competitiveness and economic growth.
