Abstract
Indicators show that the European Union and therefore Slovenia are not globally competitive on the basis of natural resources or low prices, but primary on the basis of knowledge. More than ever, this is important in the times of recession. The program group will continue its research work in the specified field - the field of learning, knowledge, and innovation management, in line with the goal of reversing the downward trend of Slovenia's competitiveness and achieving higher employment rates, which require greater investment in knowledge and skills to eliminating the gap between supply and demand in the labor market. Upgrading of scientific research achievements in the field of learning and knowledge management is based the conceptual model that links members of the research group and consists of studying the impact of the environment, the basic variables and intermediate variables on the performance of organizations in the future. The studied model will consist of structural dimensions, which will be the primary research focus of the group members of the Faculty of Organizational Sciences, University of Maribor and procedural dimensions, which will be the dominant research focus of the program group members of the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana.
The strategic goal of the research program is the development of horizontal connections between interdisciplinary fields and their integration into organizational learning and knowledge management in the area of Business model of the future (Attachment/Annex), which is the conceptual model of the research group, through defining antecedents, intermediary variables, and outcomes of learning and knowledge management.
The research group is pursuing the following theoretical goals: (1) advancing the development of scientific research field of organizational learning and learning organization; (2) defining the typology of organizational learning; (3) recognizing and using different learning styles and experiential learning; (4) examining the links between managerial practices and the development of different components of intellectual capital in organizations; (5) developing innovative HRM approaches for the new busines model and career development/ mobility of human resources at organizational and inter-organizational level; (6) perception research od work-life balance and its influence on knowledge transfer and other organizational processes (7) finding the elements of future organizations' performance management.
The main added value of the research group in the field of science will be a definition of a unique, generalized theory of knowledge, learning and innovation, which will be the result of the group’s definition and design of a multidimensional matrix – conceptual model ‘’Business model of the future’’, which is based on knowledge, learning and innovation management in organizations, as a basis for sustainable growth in the environment of irreversible changes. This multidimensional matrix - new "Business model of the future" is a process innovation in the scientific area of management and organization, thus development of horizontal connections between interdisciplinary fields, which are thematically united under the learning and knowledge management, which are all important for the organizations’ existence and sustainability in the future. Combining structural and process dimensions means a paradigm shift in the scientific field of organizations and management.
Significance for science
The contribution of the research group to further development of science in the field of learning, knowledge and innovation management in Slovenian as well as international environment is significant, as the program group achieved all defined theoretical goals and thereby contributed to the development of science in the fields of: (1) advancing the development of scientific research field of organizational learning and learning organization; (2) defining the typology of organizational learning; (3) recognizing and using different learning styles and experiential learning; (4) examining the links between managerial practices and the development of different components of intellectual capital in organizations; (5) developing innovative HRM approaches for the new business model and career development/ mobility of human resources at organizational and inter-organizational level; (6) perception research of work-life balance and its influence on knowledge transfer and other organizational processes (7) finding the elements of future organizations' performance management. The scientific contribution of the group members is founded on the findings of numerous interdisciplinary studies, focused on connecting scientific fields of learning, knowledge and innovation management with the fields of leadership, quality management, strategic management, cost and performance management, organizational behavior, organizational design and production management. Established horizontal connections between interdisciplinary fields, integrated into the field of learning, knowledge and innovation management from structural and procedural perspectives, add value to the scientific field of management and organization based on conceptual framework of the business model of the future, as well as importantly add to developing the unified theory of knowledge, learning and innovation. Established links are also important for further existence and sustainable development of organizations. Combining structural and process dimensions within the research program has contributed significantly to overcome existing partition of managerial and organizational scientific spheres, which represents an important s paradigm shift. Joint research activities of group members from the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana (FELU) and the Faculty of Organizational Sciences (FOV), University of Maribor, and their collaboration with renowned international researchers thus allows the group to do the research at the international level and thereby raise their visibility within the international scientific sphere. The program group has also significantly contributed to further development of science by disseminating theoretical and empirical results of their in-depth international researches – by publishing monographs, scientific articles in SCI/SSCI journals, including the most respected scientific journals in the field of management, other contributions, as well as active participation at international scientific conferences. Members of the group were also active in the editorial boards of several scientific journals, as well as performing blind peer reviewers of scientific articles related to the studied scientific field. Members have also disseminate their knowledge and research findings by integrating it into the pedagogical process at FELU and FOV through the creation of new courses, integrating the results of studies into existing courses, as well as several mentorships at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral studies and mentoring young researchers. Collaboration with renowned international researchers and academics and engaging them into the educational and mentoring processes at FELU and FOV, as well as guest lectures and seminars given at the renowned foreign universities by members of the research group further confirms the scientific contribution of the research group in Slovenian as well as international scientific community.
Significance for the country
The research group has significantly contributed to further development of Slovenia through knowledge and research findings dissemination within the “quadruple helix - academia, government, business and community. The research results contribute to the further development and raise the quality of performance related to scientific fields of learning, knowledge and innovation management and established horizontal connections with the fields of leadership, quality management, strategic management, cost and performance management, organizational behavior, organizational design and production management. Better utilization of capacities related to competitive and dynamic society based on knowledge, learning and innovation enables further development, as those are the crucial elements for increasing competitiveness, raising employment levels and further sustainable development of Slovenian society. Based on the acquired knowledge and research findings, members of the program group successfully participated in several Slovenian and international projects (some co-financed by the European Union), organized and conducted a number of seminars and workshops and engaged as (co)organizers of conferences to facilitate the knowledge application in Slovenian, as well as key international (particularly European, Balkan and Chinese) business and public sectors, academia and society. In addition, members were also active in connecting and transferring the knowledge between business and academic sphere through organizing students meetings with renowned alumni as well as guest lectures given by successful businessmen at the undergraduate and master's programs. Future Slovenian economists and managers were trained with an emphasis on ethical, moral and socially-responsible practices as well as to strengthen their creativity and innovation based on the developed business model of the future to increase the knowledge absorption, which will bring benefits for the economy on the long-term, increase innovation capacities and, consequently, contribute to further sustainable development of Slovenia. In the context of practical contributions, it should be emphasized that member’s scientific articles, published in top ranking SSCI journals in the field of management echoed importantly also in the business community, as findings were popularized and published also in worldwide renowned publications, including The New York Times. Members were active also in other socially responsible areas, which can be, among others, proved by the Rector's Award for several years of tutoring at FELU issued to a group member, as well as the established cooperation with the Slovenian Olympic Committee to develop a new undergraduate program of Management in sport at FOV. The program results bring direct benefits for Slovenian academia, public and business sectors, as well as community, related to key strategic development priorities and strategic objectives of the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union, focusing on: (1) Knowledge, as a key factor in promoting the competitiveness of the national economy in Slovenia in the context of the implementation of the Lisbon strategy to raising employment rates and strengthening the professional capital of stakeholders through implementation of new teaching methods and holistic beings development; (2) Entrepreneurship and innovative society through encouraging entrepreneurship, innovation and creativeness of individuals; (3) Transition to a green society through knowledge dissemination in the form of published scientific articles, lectures and seminars given on the topic related to sustainable development in the international environment; (4) Strengthening of an inclusive society through enhancing the capacities of young graduates and reducing their long-term unemployment; and (5) Effective public sector in terms of knowledge dissemination within the given seminars, workshops and lectures to enhance their competencies.
