Abstract
In research program the natural progression of periodontal disease in 20 year period and influence of the long standing chronic infection in periodontal tissues on the development of some systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis and pneumonia will be studied. In the frame of the research program the evaluation of the periodontal wound and the influence of periodontal treatment on improvement of cardiovascular disease and diabetes will be evaluated. The prevalence of caries and periodontal disease in patients with special needs and role of NO on bone remodeling during the orthodontic treatment will be studied. In addition the role of the gene for cathepsin C in Papillon-Lefevre syndrom and influence of periodontal inflammation on activation of hypothalamo-hypophise-suprarenal axis will be studied. In therapeutic part of the program the use of pulse Er-YAG laser for periodontal surgery and the use of local subgingival delivery of antioxidant enzymes for treatment of periodontal inflammation will be evaluated.
Significance for science
Result of research program revealed the prevalence of periodontal disease among 35-85 year-old citizens of Ljubljana. The results will be used for planing of preventive and curative periodontal measures among citiziens of Ljubljana and Slovenia. The results about the role of viruses, oxygen free radicals and neurogenic components in peridontal inflammation contributed to better understanding of etiopathogenesis of periodontal disease and are important contributions to international research community. Treatment of periodontal disease in diabetes patients demontrated that subgingival application of minocycline and the use of full- mouth desinfection method significantly improve periodontal conditions and metabolic control of diabetes. In the field of periodontal surgery we were the first to demonstrate the use of Er:YAG laser and longitudinal successl in treatment of periodontal disease.
Significance for the country
The results of the research program are important for Slovenia as we demontrated the prevalence of periodontal disease and treatment needs among adult citiziens of Ljubljana. The results imply the need for more efficient preventive measure and great need for periodontal treatment among dentists and periodontists. The results of periodontal survey also imply the need for introduction of dental hygienists in oral care of Slovenia. The results of the research program also demontrated that the diabetes patients are the risk population for development of periodontal disease. Results demonstrated that diabetes patients need priority dental and periodontal treatment which contribute to improvement of metabolic control and delay of complications in diabetes patients. The use of modern technology like Er:YAG laser put Slovenia on the international top of the use of high technology in treatment of periodontal disease.
