Significance for science
Within the project we developed a methodology for determining areas at risk of drought, according to the available water resources for irrigation, which is a contribution to science. The result is a scale division of water resources for irrigation of agricultural land according to availability, limitations or rate of flow. The synthesis of these three conditions is designed classes availability of water resources for irrigation and the consequent threat of Slovenian agriculture in the occurrence of drought. The final results of the analysis in the report of the project are presented graphically. The methodology is universal and transferable to any environment, where dealing with the problem of available water resources for irrigation or other activity.
Significance for the country
The project has met the recommendation of the Audit Report (Audit of the Republic of Slovenia, 2007) that the ministry responsible for agriculture, forestry and food and the ministry responsible for environment have to ensure analyses of available, actually used, and the potential capacity of all water resources, suitable for irrigation. At the same time assessed water perspective Slovenia enables more transparent and more consistent sustainable water planning and to simplify and shorten the process from introduction to the use of irrigation systems. Shorten and simplify the procedure itself may provide an incentive to farmers for construction of small irrigation systems in order to prevent the occurrence of drought. Both last-mentioned is the recommendation of the Audit of the Republic of Slovenia to the responsible ministries.
