Abstract
Endocrine, immune, nervous and enzyme systems regulate endogenous processes in healthy and sick animals. The understanding of their mechanisms is very important for the development of basal and applied knowledge in veterinary medicine as well as for the invention of new therapies. The aim of the programme is to reveal some new responses in physiological and pathological situations in animals, using the clinical and basal studies. Investigations comprise: sexual dimorphism, receptor expression, development and function of locomotory system, physiological properties of autohtonous breeds, microcystins and the embryonal development, connections between endocrine and immune systems in some animal diseases.
Significance for science
Research work within the programme contributed to the development of veterinary medicine by publishing scientific papers, by the connection with other research institutions as well as by the successful application of the results. Results of the proposed research programme will also contribute to the progress in veterinary medicine by implementing of basal knowledge obtained from these studies in everyday use in case of development/use of new diagnostic methods and drugs as well as new therapeutic methods. The development of non-invasive methods contributed to animal welfare. Investigation of new therapeutic substances enables the collaboration with pharmaceutical industry. The up-to-date research subjects has enabled worldwide networking with other research and education institutions as well as the publication of the results in veterinary scientific reviews and reviews of other life sciences. Collaboration took place with some veterinary and other faculties in EU, USA and former republics of Yugoslavia in the frame of international projects and other means of collaborations.
Significance for the country
International networking was based on the research work, collaboration with other research and education institutions and invited lectures. Organization of conferences enables spreading the knowledge and promoting our scientific work and our country Slovenia. The research programme has also been aimed to attracting young scientists, enabling them to perform master and doctor thesis. The members of the programme team are involved in the university’s graduate and postgraduate study programmes. Basal knowledge obtained from the studies has been successfully implemented to everyday use by invention of new diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic methods. This is also the way for increasing our competitive position of the clinical service on the market. Development on non-invasive methods contributes to animal welfare. Preservation of autochthonous breeds is essential for saving the biodiversity in Slovenia aiming at the breeding promotion and international recognition.
