Tomaž Deželan is Professor of Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana and Advisor to the Rector of the University of Ljubljana for quality assurance and development issues. He also acts as research coordinator at the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Ljubljana. Prof. Deželan pursued a research career as a research fellow at the Institute of Social sciences and associate researcher at the University of Edinburgh, School of Law. He coordinated more than 20 basic and applicative research projects related to youth and citizenship education funded by the European Commission, Slovenian national research agency and European Social Fund. He holds a prestigious title of Jean Monnet Chair for citizenship education awarded by the European Commission. His current projects include research on citizenship education of youth, capacity of youth organizations, and the effects of the Erasmus + programme on youth (RAY MON, CAP, LTE), prevention of radicalization of youth (TRACES), transition of youth to the world of work (WEXHE), entrepreneurship of young people (BLUES), substantive political representation of young people (basic research project, Slovenian Research Agency), shrinking youth civic spaces (European Youth Forum), political participation of youth (bilateral project with USA), acts as an expert for EXCEPT Horizon 2020 project focusing on youth, and is a co-lead of the Youth 2020 project evaluating the position of Slovenian youth funded by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. Prof. Deželan also performs the role of the principal researcher for the Youth Progress Index (OSCE ODIHR, European Youth Forum, International IDEA, Deloitte, Social Progress Imperative) and is the principal evaluator of the National Programme for youth, national evaluator of the E+ Youth in action programme, principal research partner of the National E+ YiA Agency, principal research partner of the Office of the Republic of Slovenia for Youth, principal reviewer of the European Commission’s Youth Wiki initiative, member of the Council of Europe and European Commission’s European Pool of Youth Researchers, policy advisor of the OSCE for the field of political participation of youth, policy advisor of the International IDEA for the field of intergenerational dialogue, policy consultant of the European Youth Forum for the field of political participation and representation of youth, and member of the Council of the Government of the RS for Youth’s Working Group on quality framework in the youth sector. He is a visiting scholar at University of Tallinn, Estonia, University of Rijeka, Croatia, San Jose State University, USA, National federal university of Stavropol, Russia and the Institute for social studies Zagreb. He authored or co-authored more than 30 peer reviewed scientific journal articles, 25 chapters in edited volumes, 10 scientific monographs and edited several edited volumes and journal special issues (ISI ranked) and several policy papers for international governmental organizations (OSCE, International IDEA).
