Description
Slovenian Museum of Natural History (PMS-LJ) is a national scientific and educational institution. It was funded in 1821 as a Carniolan Provincial Museum. Since 1918 it was a department of the National Museum to become an independent institution in 1944. Its basic activity is the management of the natural history collections which are of national and broader significance. Research collections serve to document temporal changes in biodiversity and to witness the development of natural history sciences. Scientific activities are organised in the Museum's research department which is mainly engaged in biodiversity studies, but include also geology, paleontology and mineralogy. Besides, the Museum maintains a botanical garden "Alpinum Juliana" which is located in the Julian Alps. Two scientific journals are published by the Museum: Scopolia and Acta entomologica (the latter together with the Slovenian Entomological Society).
