Abstract
The core of geographic study forms a ''''triangle'''' of interactions within the system of nature - human - society. In a series of this kind of study, we approach landscapes as living spaces which is the principle connecting link between both branches of geography (physical and social) and also between related disciplines. In the context ''''the landscape as a living space'''', spatial (regional) problems and environmental problems have special significance. Right from the start, geography also tries in its way to find answers to them. Therefore, complex methods of studying spatial structures have been formed, on the basis of which practical solutions are also being sought. Lately the notion of sustainable development has been included in them.
Models of geographical investigation of sustainable regional development are based on studying the possibilities of sustainable development founded on the postulations that form social and social-geographic changes, natural-geographic dynamics of landscapes and the reproduction of natural bounty.
The aim of the investigation is to prepare theoretical and practical models of harmonised regional development and purposeful use of surface founded on modern awareness of the limits of natural resources, the level of infrastructure and human (demographic) potentials. Investigation on a theoretical level and level using models show the opposing development concept of ''''globalisation'''', on the one hand, and concepts of ''''regionalisation'''' on the other hand and the possibilities of harmonising these concepts that are in favour of regional political groupings as opposed to state interests.
