Biography
Vasja Vehovar is a full professor of statistics at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences, and head of the Centre for Social Informatics, which currently has 25 researchers. Since 1996 he has been one of the pioneers in the field of web survey methodology. From 2002-2005 he coordinated the EU project Web Survey Methodology (WebSM, www.websm.org) of the Fifth Framework Programme. In 2009, Vasja Vehovar, together with Katja Lozar Manfreda, received the Warren J. Mitofsky Innovators Award from the American Association for Public Opinion Research for their work in establishing the WebSM portal and their outstanding contributions to the development of web survey methodology. In 2012, he received the Recognition for Scientific Excellence awarded by the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences, to researchers and pedagogical staff who are the most cited authors according to SICRIS and WOS. For their work in the field of online surveys, Vasja Vehovar and Katja Lozar Manfreda also received the Excellence in Science 2016 award in Social Sciences and Humanities from the Slovenian Research Agency (SRA). He is a member of the editorial boards of scientific journals (SCOPUS among others) Survey Research Methods, Acta Informatica Pragensia and Advances in Methodology and Statistics. He has worked as a consultant for many national and international projects in the field of survey methodology and informatics. Among others, he led the development of the methodology for the Slovenian Labour Force Survey, the evaluation of the National Reader Survey, and the quality assurance of samples and responses in the Slovenian Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies. From 1995 to 1996 he was the President of the Statistical Society of Slovenia. In 2018, he received the Statistical Society of Slovenia Award for the promotion of the statistical profession in Slovenia. From 2011 to 2016, Vasja Vehovar was a member of the Methodological Council of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia. From 2002 to 2020, he was a member of the Digital Society Statistics Council, an advisory body to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia. He was also a member of the founding committee of the European Association Survey Research Association (ESRA, 2005-2009). From 2007-2014 he was a founding member of the European Social Survey Methodological Group (ESS) and was a member of the Advisory Board of the ESS online panel CRONOS (2016-2018). He has also acted as an evaluator of project proposals in the field of the Information Society within the EU Framework Programme. In 2011-2015 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Slovenian Research Agency for Interdisciplinary Sciences and in 2013-2017 he was a member of the Committee for Informatization at the University of Ljubljana. Since 2014 he has been leading the Internet Research programme, a long-term research activity funded by the Slovenian Research Agency. Among his important socio-economic achievements is the development of the open source and freely available software tool for web surveys 1KA (www.1ka.si), which has more than 85,000 registered users and over 3 million survey responses per year. In this context, he has been organising annual national professional conferences for survey methodologists, Web Survey Day (dsa.1ka.si), since 2012. In collaboration with the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia and the National Institute of Public Health, he also launched the annual workshop on mixed-mode surveys in 2015 and continues to coordinate it to this day. Since 2005, he has also continuously coordinated a large national awareness centre for safer internet use (www.safe.si) and a website for reporting illegal content (www.spletnooko.si).
