Significance for science
The importance of the research programme for the development of science is in the following contributions: a/ Establishment of the existence and types of specific factors requiring adaptation/modification of the existing theories on small transition countries and for the technology and internationalisation laggards. Slovenian experience have been contrasted via comparative analyses with other new EU member states and transitition countries. b/ Verification of the selected theories in the globalisation framework and with regard to redistribution of power/market shares. We confirm the hypothesis that prevailing paradigms of established theories do not recognise sufficiently contemporary circumstances and should therefore be modernised, modified or even replaced. c/ Design of multi-disciplinary theoretical framework, overarching the mono-disciplinary approach of most base theories. d/ Proposal of strategies/policies of countries and their actors, which, on the basis of new findings, lead to strengthening of the competitive position of these actors and better international positioning of the countries in contemporary world. e/ Placement of our scientific findings in the global knowledge flow through our intensive international research co-operation via publication of our scientific results in international journals and books. f/ Building of original empirical data-bases and knowledge, building valuable resource available also to other researchers as well as to policy-makers. Results of the research are reflected in the publication of 144 scientific articles (of that 72 in journals indexed in SSCI and/or Scopus, 6 in A1 category and 24 A2 categories), 81 chapters in scientific monographs (of that 44 with recognized international publishers), 33 scientific monographs etc.
Significance for the country
The research programme is highly coherent with the priorities set forth in the Slovenian Development Strategy, since it focuses on the strengthening of the position of Slovenia and its actors in the globalisation processes. Close integration of the programme in the socio-economic development of Slovenia is reflected also through high participation of the researchers in Target research programme: Competitiveness of Slovenia”, in the work of IMAD, in several studies and expert analyses prepared for the Ministry of foreign affairs, Ministry of economy, Ministry of finance, Ministry of higher education, science and technology, JAPTI, SID, Chamber of Commerce and several enterprises. Members of the research group also participate in different economic and political boards (Strategic Council of Ministry of Foreign affairs, expert bodies of the Office for Growth, Board for reforms of the government of Rep. of Slovenia), were actively engaged in the preparation of Slovenian Development Strategy and Discussions on the future of Slovenia. With the presentation of their findings on Slovenia and on co-operation possibilities with Slovenian enterprises, the researchers actively promote Slovenia abroad. Through their teaching they transfer novel global knowledge to Slovenia. More specifically, the importance of the research programme for development of Slovenia is reflected in: a/ Increased knowledge on the factors affecting the increase of absorption capacity of Slovenian enterprises for knowledge transfer and innovation, as well as strengthening of innovation capacity. Research is focused on the development of required capabilities within the enterprises as well as on identification of appropriate policies (especially innovation policy) to the new challenges in the international environment, to strengthening of internationalisation and growing importance of services. This contributes to promotion of technology development and decreasing of the gap between Slovenia and more advanced countries. b/ Contribution to creation of the knowledge needed in Slovenia for its transition to knowledge based society and for more dynamic internationalisation activity of its actors to participate in the globalisation processes. c/ Due to the fact that national identity affirms itself globally in relation to others, the activity of the research group, aimed at active participation of Slovenia and its actors in international environment, contributes to promotion of the country and to the strengthening of national identity. Through this, it contributes also to the improvement of structural position of Slovenia and its actors in the international community. d/ In view of the high level of participation of the research group in the education process at the Faculty of Social Sciences at University of Ljubljana as well as at other higher education institutions in Slovenia and abroad (Great Britain, Austria, Italy, Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina), the transfer of research results to education programmes is significant.
