Description
The Institute of Metals and Technology, formerly the Metallurgical Institute of Ljubljana, was established in 1950 by the Slovenian Government in order to provide a foundation for research and development in metallurgy. Priority was initially given to extractive metallurgy, but later gradually shifted towards the reparation of alloys from metal waste, whereas research work has been mainly directed towards the development of alloys and how to process them in order to optimise their properties. In 1997 the Institute was transformed into a public research institute. The Institute’s activities are the following: developing metals and alloys as well as technologies for their production and processing; expert studies in the fields of metals and metallic materials, and the determination of their specific properties; quality assurance of metallic materials and products; education and training of technical staff and experts qualified for research and development in these fields, as well as for work in industry. Numerous technologies in the fields of the production and processing of metals and metallic materials have been developed at the Institute, and later successfully transferred to industry. The Institute has also developed close cooperation with the relevant departments of both of Slovenian's universities, as well as with a number of scientific research institutes and universities in other countries.
